Unlike mechanical valves, tissue valves can wear out faster.1,2 Build-up of calcium on the leaflets is the main reason a tissue valve may break down1 meaning that you could need a second operation to replace the tissue valve. This has led Edwards Lifesciences to develop RESILIA tissue with special integrity preservation technology that will potentially allow the valve to last longer.3,4
What is the INSPIRIS RESILIA valve?
The INSPIRIS RESILIA aortic valve is a type of tissue valve containing RESILIA tissue. RESILIA tissue is bovine (cow) heart tissue that has been preserved with a unique Edwards technology, which is designed to reduce calcium build up and is expected to make the tissue more durable than previous generation tissue valves.3,5
How can the INSPIRIS RESILIA valve help?
Your doctors will work with you to decide if the INSPIRIS RESILIA valve is right for you.
However some of the benefits include:
1. Reduces calcium build-up
RESILIA tissue has demonstrated significantly less calcium build-up.3 Here you can see how RESILIA tissue (left) has less build-up of calcium on the valve leaflets than a non-RESILIA tissue valve (right).3
2. Designed for future valve replacements
If you need another replacement valve in the future, INSPIRIS RESILIA valve allows a new valve to be placed inside.4
3. Blood thinners are not needed with tissue valves
The INSPIRIS RESILIA aortic valve typically will not require you to take long-term blood thinners.6 This means that if you lead an active lifestyle, you won’t need to stop your normal activities. It also means that you won’t need to monitor the impact your blood thinner is having on you, or watch how your food could impact its effect.
